“In the beginning, God created…” (Genesis 1:1) and where did God come from? The beginning mentioned in the first text of the Bible speaks of the beginning of the time, space universe. A universe of stars, planets and heavenly bodies which are engulfed in a pre-defined space. This universe of space and it's inhabitants are all governed by time.
Psalm 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart,
Mankind lives in time, but has longings for more. Man was made in the image of God and has deep longings for that realm of existence. God is eternal and dwells in the realm of eternity. A finite man bound by time cannot comprehend an existence without end.
Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
Not only does this eternal God dwell in the land of no time, HE longs to dwell with those who are humble and contrite. The proud will not know God. The proud will only seek to know their-self and to know their desires. What a piety for a life to spend itself only to know itself and forfeit the opportunity to know the indescribable beauty of holiness and the tenderness of lovingkindness. God is infinite and mankind is finite. These realms stand in contrast to each other. This is God's design. Faith would be required for man to know God. Without faith it is impossible to please God.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Do you seek to know God personally? Is there a longing inside of you that calls you to a place of humility and contriteness of spirit? He has promised to reward those who will seek HIM. This God who inhabits eternity longs to draw close to the soul of man. God is. He is the Creator. This must be taken by faith and when it is an exciting journey of discovery will begin.
“The eternal, independent, and self-existent Being: the Being whose purposes and actions spring from himself, without foreign motive or influence: he who is absolute in dominion; the most pure, the most simple, and most spiritual of all essences; infinitely benevolent, beneficent, true, and holy: the cause of all being, the upholder of all things; infinitely happy, because infinitely perfect; and eternally self-sufficient, needing nothing that he has made: illimitable in his immensity, inconceivable in his mode of existence, and indescribable in his essence; known fully only to himself, because an infinite mind can be fully apprehended only by itself. In a word, a Being who, from his infinite wisdom, cannot err or be deceived; and who, from his infinite goodness, can do nothing but what is eternally just, right, and kind.” (Adam Clark - Theologian)
From a human perspective this is a very powerful description of an infinite God from a finite creature. For man at his best state is simply wreckage of the fall. He was limited as his initial creation, but is even more limited by his fall into sin.
Psalm 39:5 Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
In relation to the description of God, there was an existence before the beginning of time when the triune God was alone. "In the beginning, God. "There was no heaven, where His glory is now particularly manifested. There was no earth to engage His attention. There were no angels to hymn His praises; no universe to be upheld by the word of His power. There was nothing, no one, but God; and that, not for a day, a year, or an age, but "from everlasting." (A.W. Pink)
These descriptions of God put Him in a very lofty position and mankind in a very lowly position. Are you prepared to judge God and determine His existence? Or, are you prepared to discover the place of blessing by way of a humble and contrite spirit. Consider briefly the testimony of scripture.
Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
Deuteronomy 33:27 The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms:
God is and forever shall be. Man is finite. He is limited. He needs salvation from the infinite, eternal God. Will be seek HIM? Will we choose to pursue the glorious character of our God.
"The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can engage the attention of a child of God is the name, the nature, the person, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father.... It is a subject so vast, that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity; so deep, that our pride is drowned in its infinity." (C.H. Spurgeon)
The child of God is privileged to call this one the Bible identifies as God as his Father. The child of God is exhorted to cry out “Abba Father” or more commonly put: “Oh daddy!” Does your soul cry out to the very God of the universe? Do you know HIM? The soul of man was made to be the very dwelling place of God. Without God, the void that fills the soul becomes insatiable in its' pursuit of satisfaction. This relationship is established by faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:9-10 & 13 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
This is the promise of the Father who longs to dwell with you and to reveal Himself to you.
Jeremiah 24:7 And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
God by nature and definition has no cause as HE is the first cause of all causes. Mankind is finite and must come to God in a spirit of humility and contriteness. This coming must be by faith. Faith born from the living Word of God. Moses had some concerns about communicating the truth of God to the people of God. He questioned the LORD and said, When I meet with the people and explain to them that you have sent me, what do I tell them is your name?
“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM:….” (Exodus 3:14) That is my name Moses, I AM. If God were created, then He wouldn’t truly be God but rather whoever created Him would be God. HE is I AM. The first cause of all causes and the reason we have a hard time grasping the infinite and eternal is that we are finite. We are limited. Therefore, in time, we must choose to live a life of faith. Faith that reveals to us the very character and nature of God who is Good. Ask God to reveal to you His name and character as you walk through this study which will cover many of the attributes of God who the redeemed call Father.
