Greetings Friends,

Proverbs 22:4  By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.

Too often the phrase, “the fear of the LORD” carries a negative connotation.  The understanding of “the fear of the LORD” is anything but negative.

According to Proverbs chapter 8 “the fear of the LORD” is to hate evil.  Evil stands in opposition to God and the things of God.  Evil in the context of Proverbs 22:4 stands in opposition to riches, honor and life.

Luke 16:11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

Mammon is a reference to that which is empty, or vain, the wealth, the riches, the material gain which men often lose their lives to acquire.  This is in contrast to the true riches of grace.  The riches found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  The riches found in the very life and person of the Son of God.

Men seek honor.  They seek to esteem themselves above another.  They seek to gain the places of authority and power.  But without the fear of the LORD all is vanity.  What honor can men bestow upon one another that would compare to the honor that comes from God.

John 5:44  How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

Honor from God is to be robed in the very righteousness of Christ, to be identified as the very bride of Christ to have the assurance of being in that select family notably called the very sons of God.  This is the honor “…that cometh from God only”.  But then the promise is also for life.

Proverbs 22:4  By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.

What is life without Christ and the blessings of grace?  It is to drink of the dregs of sin.  It is to walk in the despair of vanity.  It is to hunger for peace and find only torment.  A hopeless, empty, pointless, existence that searches for meaning but finding none.  But those who fear the LORD will discover the abundant life in time and eternal life with God discovering the exceeding riches of HIS grace in HIS kindness toward those who believe.

Will you choose the evil or will you embrace the riches, honor and life offered to those who will fear the LORD?

Listen to the commentary of Jesus on the subject of evil.

John 3:19-20 19  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Light stands in contradistinction to evil.  “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3)  The world lay in darkness, but light came and dispelled the darkness.  The darkness could not cross the boundary of light.  Darkness flees the presence of light. Jesus came into the world showing the beauty of the light.  The stars shine like diamonds on black velvet, but men grovel in the dainty delights of the cursed earth instead of embracing the beauty of the light.

Psalm 107:8 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Do you see the glory of the fear of the LORD?  Do you desire to embrace it?  Do you long for its’ reality in your life?

Hebrews 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
