The Apostle John knew the Lord. He had intimate fellowship with HIM. The fellowship was powerful and it brought great joy. John is now writing to tell us that WE TOO can enjoy this powerful, glorious, joyous fellowship. We can enjoy it by walking in the light.
1 John 1:5-7 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (KJV)
Consider with me some analogies in relation to light and darkness.
Light is nothing to the blind: they cannot see it nor appreciate it.
2 Peter 1:2-9 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. (KJV)
When grace and peace are being multiplied to us, we are growing, developing maturing. God is real to us and our worship grows. But is we are making the grace of God of none effect, we become blind.
Light reveals uncleanness but cannot itself be made unclean.
Matthew 23:24-28 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. (KJV)
Light reflects more clearly from a clean surface.
Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. (KJV)
The 13 verses that precede this verse tell us how to walk in the light; tell us how to be a clean vessel. The poor in spirit, mourning over our sin, meek before God, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, then the world will react with persecution. This truth is powerfully illustrated in my first two books: Planted Developing the Disciple and Planted... Or Not!
The persecution comes because darkness will have no fellowship with light.
The moon is a dead planet. It has no life. The bible tells us that we were once dead in trespasses and sins. But Christ who is our life has made us to be children of light. The moon is so positioned in the universe that it catches the light of the sun and reflects to a world that is now turned away from the sun. Have we so positioned ourselves, so that, we are facing the son (Christ) and are clean, thus reflecting light to a world that is now turned away from the sun. If not then we are walking away from the light, with our backs facing the light, therefore, we are walking in our own shadow. We are walking in darkness.
Scientist tell us that when light is broken up it has seven hues of color which form the light spectrum. We are further told that apart from the rays of pure light, all plant life would be colorless. You see a red rose is only red because it has the ability to absorb or to take in by its senses the red rays of pure light. We too like the plant kingdom can only reflect that which we can absorb. Oh beloved are we learning to so position ourselves to absorb the radience of Christ and then reflect it to others.
We have been positioned IN CHRIST. We have been given everything that pertains to life and godliness. Daily our beloved God and Savior loads us up with benefits. Will we surrender our will to thine. Will we say with Jesus: Father not my will by thine?
