Jesus said in John 10:27 - "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:"
From the moment I was saved, I knew God was more than an impersonal deity. God is someone who desires to be personal, intimate with HIS children. He desires to be our Father. He has made us his sons.
1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. (KJV)
Zeph 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. (KJV)
God, who gave to us Jesus Christ, so that we might be saved, wants the very best for our lives. Therefore, I believe it to be very important that we obey him. Let us now consider our text.
Matthew 13:53-58 53 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had fin ished these parables, he departed thence. 54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55 Is not this
the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? 57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. 58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. (KJV)
When Jesus spake in the BEGINNING, HE brought into existence everything into the universe from nothing. There was no material. There was no space for the material to exist in. HE spoke and it all came into existence.
John 1:1-3 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (KJV)
If you and I would have been there when God spake into existence the universe, I am sure we would have been astonished. I doubt whether praise could have come out of our mouths because we would have been so overwhelmed and amazed, completly astonished at the demonstration of God's mighty power through HIS spoken word. In Mark 5, a young girl has died, but Jesus comes on the scene.
Mk 5:39-42 39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. 40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. 41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee,
arise. 42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. If we were to witness such a thing, would not we be astonished with a great astonishment. Jesus spake and the dead girl lived. Can you imagine being at a funeral of a loved one only to have Jesus walk down the aisle touch the loved one and have them raised from the dead. Would we not be astonished?
Consider John 7:32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. (KJV)
John 7:40-46 40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. 41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? 43 So there was a division among the people because of him. 44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on
him. 45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? 46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. (KJV)
Never a man spake like Jesus spoke. This is perfectly illustrated in John 18.
John 18:1-6 1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. 2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. 3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus
saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. (KJV)
I believe all who beheld this sight were astonished at the power of HIS WORD. Surely, never a man spake like this man. Everytime I consider the words spake by Christ on the Cross, "IT IS FINISHED", I am astonished. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, went to the cross to bear in his body my sins; he went there to endure the wrath of God, so that, I might be forgiven. So that I might dwell with the Father for all of eternity. I am overwhelmed. I am
amazed at HIS great love for me and HIS great power and ability to deliver me from death, hell and the grave. But notice again verse 54 of our text.
Matt 13:54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, inso much that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? (KJV)
How is it that this man has this great wisdom and the ability to do these great and mighty works. This man whom they saw as a baby in His mother's arms. This man whom had romped in the village streets with his brothers and friends. This carpenter who had come with his father Joseph to fix things in their home. How is it that this man this carpenter's son hath such wisdom and is able to do such mighty works. They were offended in HIM. notice verse 57:
Matt 13:57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, a prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. (KJV)
They were too proud to be taught by one of such commonness. They were too proud to be taught by one who they considered at best to be their equal and in most cases they considered him to be inferior. But they did not know who he was. Therefore they rejected him. Jesus Christ wept over the nation of Israel because he wanted to gather them together as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings to care for them; to make them HIS people, but
they would not. When Jesus speaks, we need to be astonished. We need to be amazed. We need to be overwhelmed. We need to run to him falling before in worshipful submission. For why should a holy God speak to a sinner such as me? When HE speaks we should run to him. But Israel rejected Christ and notice
what follows rejection.
Matt 13:58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. (KJV)
When Israel hardened their hearts against God, they wandered in the wilderness for forty years.
Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (KJV)
Is God by the Spirit of God through the Word of God speaking to you? Be astonished! Be amazed! Be overwhelmed! Run to HIM fall before HIM and follow the example of the Apostle Paul in:
Acts 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?
Jesus Christ was the 1st man in the history of the world to walk upon this earth and let God be God in His life. He said, "...Lo, I come to do thy will, O God." (Hebrews 10:9) He daily lived with this mindset "...not my will, but thine be done." Every human
being must be born again. Thus enabling them to come into a spiritual relationship with God. Then secondly, they need to stay in that place of being astonished every time our blessed Saviour would take the time and the effort to speak to us. Is HE speaking to you this moment?
